Waved Sphinx (Ceratomia undulosa) (Walker, 1856)

 

Synonyms: Daremma undulosa, Ceratomia repentinus

 

 

Ceratomia undulosa is a North American sphinx ranging from Alberta to Nova Scotia, and south to Texas, northeastern Mexico, and Florida. It is found in deciduous forests and woodlands, riparian vegetation, and hedgerows. The wingspan is 78-110 mm. The forewing is gray- to yellowish-brown with wavy black and white lines, and a distinct white spot. The hindwing is brownish-gray with three darker lines. The caterpillar feeds on leaves of ash (Fraxinus spp.) and other Oleaceae, hawthorn (Crataegus spp.), lilac (Syringa), etc. Adults probably do not feed. One generation in the north (May-August), and two in the south (March-October).
